Orchids & Plants of Filoha

Join Roaring Fork Conservancy and Pitkin County Open Space & Trails for an early morning adventure at Filoha Meadows.

Located near Redstone on Highway 133, Filoha Meadows Nature Preserve contains a natural thermal wetland, providing unique habitat for rare orchids, fireflies, and many other plant and animal species.

We’ll explore areas typically closed to the public to look at the blooming bog and spring orchids, while also discovering other plants that call this preserve home.  Please note: We will be accessing Filoha Meadows from a different location than previous years (prior to 2020), and this includes a longer hike of about 2 miles roundtrip. 

Please keep in mind:

• This program is appropriate for those 12 years and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent.
• Filoha is also home to many mosquitoes and blackflies. We recommend long sleeves and pants and bug spray (to be sprayed on before entering the preserve). RFC educators typically wear rain pants and a raincoat as their experience is that the bugs cannot bite through that material.  RFC has mesh head nets that participants can borrow.
• Please dress appropriately as the program will happen rain or shine.  
• Please wear hiking shoes with ankle support as there will be quite a bit of walking, including uneven and rocky terrain, and in areas of undesignated trails. 
• Hiking poles are encouraged, but not required, for extra support if needed.
• There are no restrooms, please plan accordingly.
• Please bring plenty of water and snacks, as needed.
